Frequently Asked Questions

What is Madrid best known for?

Madrid is famous for its delicious cuisine, rich Mediterranean culture, countless monuments, fountains, and parks that you can see while walking through the city, and much more.

What are the best places to visit in Madrid?

Madrid is a large city, but its main monuments and places of interest are situated in a walking distance from each other.

Take a walk through Retiro Park, passing famous fountains such as Neptuno and Cibeles, or going past the victory arcs like Puerta de Alcala is a must. Don’t forget about the gorgeous and famous squares like Plaza Mayor or Puerta del Sol, located near Gran Via street, filled with the main shops, restaurants, and hotels in Madrid.

What are the best things to do in Madrid?

Whether you’re passionate about art or simply curious, you can’t miss visiting one of the three most important museums in Spain and in the world, the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum located close to each other. If you’re a sports fan you can’t miss visiting the Real Madrid stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu.

What will the weather in Madrid be like during my visit?

Madrid’s weather is usually pleasant with warm days almost all year round, except for the hot summer months when temperatures can reach 35ºC. It rarely rains in Madrid.

The winter months from December to February are the coldest months of the year, with an average temperature of 10ºC.

What are the traditional foods in Madrid?

Madrid is home to a remarkably diverse and famous cuisine that you can try in one of many excellent restaurants.

You can’t leave Madrid without trying its famous bocadillo de calamares, a sandwich filled with fried squid. You can find it in any bar in through the city but eating it on the Plaza Mayor Square is more typical.

When visiting in the winter months, warm up with the famous Cocido Madrileño, a hot stew filled with meat, chickpeas, vegetables and more, which will make you forget about the cold. We also recommend trying the Churros with hot chocolate, a hot snack.

How to get to Madrid?

When arriving to Madrid, you`ll likely fly into Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport which is well-connected to major destinations worldwide. It is located at the outskirts of town which means you should take either the public transport such as the metro or the bus or take a taxi or uber to where you stay in Madrid.

If you’re travelling from nearby European countries like Portugal or France, you can also arrive to Madrid by train at either Chamartín or to Atocha stations, both conveniently located in the city centre.

How to get around Madrid?

Madrid’s public transport is well-maintained and operates efficiently. For the best experience, get a traveller’s pass that will give you access to any public transport options. There are over ten train lines in Madrid’s Metro system that can take you where you need. Additionally, the bus system can help you whether you need to move inside or going outside the city centre. Also, Cercanias trains will help you move to the outskirts in no time.

If you prefer, taxis are also available, but it is advisable to avoid travel during rush hour as traffic congestion tends to occur at certain times.

What areas of Madrid should you stay in?

When choosing your accommodation in Madrid, think about the diverse neighbourhoods and what each has to offer. The Atocha, Alonso Martínez or Gran Via areas, in the city centre, are perfect to move around the city and visit the most important sites.

Alternatively, if you need to be near the Airport or the famous IFEMA convention centre, staying in Barajas or Las Tablas might be the better option for you.
