The city's openness to innovations like drone delivery and other emerging technologies hints at its relentless pursuit of progress.
With 3.5 million expatriates calling the future-focused Emirate home, their diverse perspectives and recommendations of top places to visit in Downtown Dubai provide a unique lens to experience this multifaceted city.
Meet the insiders
Dolli Kisvari, the Dubai-based global citizen
Dolli Kisvari, the Marketing & Communications Manager at Anantara Downtown Dubai Hotel, appreciates the city for its unmatched safety, vibrant lifestyle and exciting growth opportunities. Originally from Budapest, she is truly a global citizen, having lived in Ibiza, Mallorca and London before making Dubai her home over three years ago.
Hana Fuchs, the UAE veteran
Hana Fuchs, Director of Marketing Communications at Minor Hotels Middle East & Africa, has called Dubai home since 2010, when she fell in love with Dubai’s diversity and its vibrant culture. Here, she is sharing her curated recommendations, focusing on refined, distinctive experiences that capture the essence of Dubai.
The starting point: the Burj Khalifa
Admittedly, most locals don’t spend their weekends on top of Burj Khalifa – but that’s only because they’ve already done it and got the proverbial t-shirt. So, don’t fight it and start with the famous skyscraper, towering over Downtown Dubai. The public observatories (levels 124 and 125) of the world’s tallest building offer sweeping views of many landmarks that you can explore more closely through telescopes.
This is Dubai, so naturally, there’s a VIP experience at Level 148 called "At The Top SKY". The ticket gets you access to the world’s highest observation deck, perched at an altitude of 555 meters (1,821 feet), refreshments at the SKY Lounge, interactive displays and video screens, and guided tours fuelled by spiced Arabic coffee and moreish baklava dessert. The highlight, however, is the stunning outdoor terrace – one of the top places to visit in Downtown Dubai.
For an added thrill, try the glass walk or the virtual reality quest on Level 125, which simulates a spy mission culminating in an adrenaline-pumping parachute jump. After this hair-raising experience, you'll gain a newfound appreciation for Tom Cruise and his daring stunts while filming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol at Burj Khalifa.
If daredevilry isn’t your style, opt for a sunset visit to the top, followed by a free Dubai Fountain show at the building’s base.
To witness the nightly spectacle in all its glory, secure a spot on the Waterfront Promenade, dine at a nearby restaurant with a view, or take a Souk Al Bahar Abra Ride – Hana’s recommendation that includes a private traditional boat cruise with a front-row seat to the Dubai Fountain show.
Another essential thing to do in Dubai Downtown: get lost in The Dubai Mall
The Dubai Mall is undoubtedly one of the top places to visit in Downtown Dubai. This sprawling, air-conditioned community hub at the base of the Burj Khalifa is a microcosm of Dubai: visitors, expats and locals indulging in luxury shopping marathons at Chanel and Cartier; enjoying family outings to the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo; or sipping cappuccinos with views of the Dubai Fountain at Joe's Café.
In short, to step into the Dubai Mall is to immerse yourself in the beating heart of the city’s cosmopolitan society. It can also be hard to leave, given the sheer number of things to do, see and try.
There’s an Olympic-sized ice-skating rink, an indoor playground where kids can pretend working in 40+ job roles at KidZania, cinemas, luxury department stores like Galeries Lafayette and Bloomingdale's, and miles of pristine floors used by “mall walking” groups for exercise during the scorching summer months.
And if you want to zhuzh up your wardrobe with a locally designed piece, stop by the high-end boutique By Symphony, which stocks international and regional brands.
Chic cultural corners: Dubai Opera
Since the stylish outfit you picked up at The Dubai Mall deserves an outing, why not debut it with an elegant night at Dubai Opera? Another Downtown gem, this architectural masterpiece takes inspiration from the dhow – the traditional wooden vessels that have sailed Dubai Creek for centuries.
The plush auditorium, with seating for up to 2,000 impeccably dressed guests, exudes grandeur, making any visit feel delightfully special. The new pre-show dinner experience at the opera’s Grand Circle level is exclusive to Dubai Opera’s patrons and sets the tone for a sophisticated evening.
Renowned international artists such as Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli have made appearances at the prestigious cultural institution, alongside celebrated productions like The Phantom of the Opera and classic plays such as Macbeth.
Where to eat in Downtown Dubai
Downtown Dubai offers an impressive array of dining experiences, from casual coffee spots to refined Michelin-starred meals, if you want to splurge.
A breakfast to remember
Begin your day at Souk Al Bahar, a traditional-style marketplace located just steps away from the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa. With its charming blend of modern cafes and restaurants, the Arabian-themed spot will delight those looking for a peaceful breakfast with iconic views.
On weekends, the Time Out Market Dubai terrace and food hall inside the souk opens at 10:00 am and offers everything from vegan dishes and pizza to fine dining – all under one roof. It’s a great way to sample the best from 17 local restaurants and three bars.
Nearby in Business Bay – home to some of the city’s most striking architecture and the winding Dubai Water Canal – is the place to see and be seen (people watching is another idea of what to do in Dubai Downtown). Arrive hungry for your breakfast at Nine7One restaurant, surrounded by futuristic high-rises and the buzz of this dynamic district. Its expansive breakfast buffet allows you to be as adventurous or traditional as you like, and comes highly recommended by Dolli, who brings her overseas visitors here to impress them with bold Middle Eastern flavours and the distinctive Dubai cityscape.
Whether you opt for shakshuka (eggs poached in tomato sauce) or manakish (flatbread with various toppings), these hearty Middle Eastern savoury delights are the perfect fuel for a day of discovery.
Lunch in the park
In cooler months, ask your hotel to pack a gourmet picnic (or simply grab a sandwich from Waitrose at Dubai Mall) and head to Burj Park, a peaceful green space in Downtown Dubai.
Spread out under the shade of the Burj Khalifa on a picnic table, drum table or bean bag and watch the city’s energy hum around you. During the annual Dubai Shopping Festival, the park – accessible from Dubai Mall – hosts events like the Market OTB, showcasing local businesses.
Evening sophistication
In Dubai, going out usually means glamour. Start at CLAP Dubai, a dazzling fixture on the DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) dining block whose sushi, sashimi and caviar get nightly standing ovations. The views and decor don’t disappoint either. Hana also recommends rooftop cocktails and dinner at the sleek CE LA VI Dubai, where striking views come standard as well.
For a truly indulgent experience, book a table at Armani/Ristorante – Dubai Downtown’s Michelin-starred Italian institution and the ultimate answer to any foodie’s “what to do in Dubai Downtown” dilemma. While a dress code is in place, you won’t need to be decked out in Armani to make the cut. And if Italian is not your cup of tea, Dubai has a total of 19 restaurants with a Michelin star rating, offering something for everyone.
Visit the artistic Alserkal Avenue
A quick car or metro ride along the Sheikh Zayed Road lies Alserkal Avenue, the city’s artistic and cultural hub hosting more than 70 creative concepts, including permanent art spaces such as Concrete and The Edit Dubai – Hana’s favourite – a concept store that combines unique fashion and homeware finds with stylish ambiance. It’s the perfect place to browse for souvenirs and a smart addition to any itinerary.
