What to do and where to stay in the Top End
While it may be back to work and school for many, for some, it’s an opportune time to start setting the wheels in motion for the next great escape, having stockpiled the annual leave for an early or mid-year break.
For those looking for some #travelinspo, the Northern Territory’s colourful capital of Darwin presents as a stellar choice for holidaymakers seeking a tropical and multicultural getaway, and one of the city’s most popular hotels is offering special rates and value-added packages for travel between now and 30 April 2018.
From as little as $129* per night, travellers can base themselves in the heart of the city at the 27-floor Oaks Elan Darwin. Enjoy contemporary accommodation in a Hotel Harbour Room – featuring stunning views over Darwin Harbour – plus $25 restaurant credit to spend at onsite restaurant and bar The O.A.K., complimentary Wi-Fi during your stay, daily housekeeping and a bonus late checkout of 12.00pm.
And when it comes time to planning the itinerary, consider adding these key events and activities to your travel schedule.
A trip to the Top End isn’t complete without a visit to Parap Markets – an iconic foodie, arts and cultural destination that has been around since the early 80s. Running every Saturday morning from 8.00am (rain, hail or shine!), the markets tantalise travellers with a dazzling array of local produce, wares and flavours from the world over, thanks to Darwin’s multicultural identity. Whether you’re in the mood for a freshly brewed coffee, tropical fruit smoothie, or have a hankering for exotic Malaysian Laksa, this eclectic marketplace will fire up the senses.
Darwin has a rich military history, so consider timing your trip to coincide with the Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin, which is commemorated each year on 19th February at Bicentennial Park, The Esplanade. This February will mark 76 years since World War II devastated the city. Beginning at 9.30am, the service will honour and pay tribute to those who sadly lost their lives.
If you’re into high-octane thrills and spills, make a date with the Top End Mud Racing calendar – one of the wet season’s most popular events. Held on one Saturday each month from December through to April (27th January, 24th February, 24th March and 21st April) at the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex, families can BYO chairs, a picnic rug and even an esky and watch on as purpose built Top Gun vehicles right through to VWs race the clock (and each other) through deep mud and water.
Music enthusiasts are also in for a treat this April, with a tribute to the kings of disco, the Bee Gee’s, at SkyCity’s Beachside Pavilion on Saturday, 14th April. Direct from the international stage, having headlined over 2000 shows on the Las Vegas Strip, The Australian Bee Gees Show will get crowds on their feet in a toe-tapping, multi-media concert event featuring best-selling hits like ‘Staying Alive’ and ‘How Deep Is Your Love’.
It’s no secret that Darwin’s wet season produces some of Australia’s most ‘grammable’ sunsets, so what better way to capture the magic of these vivid sky shows that on the water, with the best harbour-side seat in the house. See Darwin offers twice-weekly sunset cruises aboard its fleet of yachts, not only offering guests with the chance to get up close and personal with abundant marine life as the sun dips into the ocean, but also tuck into locally caught and prepared fish and chips on the deck, washed down with a cold beer or glass of bubbles. Does it get any better?!
Terms and conditions apply; subject to availability. Valid for stays until 30 April 2018; some blackout dates apply.
